4th Grade - Mrs. Butler's Room

Front Row: Chris McLaurin, Shawntell Patterson, Eaton Twin, Renardi Boyd, Jeannie Caffereta, Candy Garrison, Slug Wimms, Shawn Vandiver
Second Row: Traci Haskett, John Judkins, Tabitha Crumb, Tess Gurley, Ronald Edmond, Chuck Hodum
Third Row: Consuelo Keith, Whitney Wortman, Wanda Davis, Chris Mays, Jennifer Pace, Sylvester Lester
Back Row: Roderick Herman, Bobby Burns, Jake Laughlin, Trey Brewster, Jana Jones, Alesha Hussey, Andrea Garrett
Teachers: Mrs. Butler, Mrs. Vandiver, Mrs. Raffiti, Mrs. Caruth

Talk about a blast from the past. When I ran across this picture, I remembered it just as if it were yesterday. This is our class picture, taken in 1981. We are standing on the steps that lead from the 2nd grade building, down to the 3rd grade building. I actually remember us walking down from the 4th grade building toward the playground, and we turned right and walked along the sidewalk that was next to the third grade building. Then we walked up towards the 2nd grade building and had this picture taken on the steps. If you walked in through those doors, I remember there was a small film room...the first room on the right as you walked through those doors. That's where we'd all go in the 2nd grade to watch films with our class (not the entire grade, but just with our teacher and the rest of our room).

Whatever happened to Shawn Vandiver? Slug Wimms? Tabby Crumb? Whitney Wortman? I remember Andrea was taller than everyone at this stage, with the exception of Kolette Morrison. Bobby and I used to arm wrestle Whitney Wortman, and she won every time. To this day, no one believes me when I tell them I had a friend named Sylvester Lester. If you look at Chris McLaurin closely, you can tell he has that HUGE retainer in his mouth. Bobby, you remember when he accidentally left it on his tray in the lunch room and threw it away? We helped him dig through the dumpster to find it. Traci...what's up with the funny face?? Chuck Hodum...I remember him telling the class one day about how he lifted weights. Yet he sometimes always managed to pee in his pants. And Tabby Crumb....she was a little thing, but you did NOT mess with her. She would tear into you and not think twice about it...

Remember Mrs. Rafetti, the librarian? She didn't put up with our crap at all! I remember getting a paddling for pulling out the National Geographic magazines and laughing at the naked people. I think Bobby or Trey got one with me, too.

Anyway, enjoy the picture!!!

Redemption

OK. So I'm starting to feel guilty about posting that picture of Kelly doing her Madonna impersonation. I figured the only way to redeem myself would be to find a pretty embarrassing picture of myself and post it. So here it is....

This was in the summer of 1984 while at Camp Yocona for Boy Scouts. I know this because I had gotten those red shoe laces before my family went to Disney World for Spring Break that year. I guess my dad snapped this picture at some point while at the campsite. I'm a stud, huh?! I had those damn braces and weighed about 150 lbs. What a joke! Seriously...whoever voted me Most Handsome in high school must have been on crack....

Saturday Night Fever

I don't know about y'all, but when we were little, there was nothing like TV on Saturday nights. When I look back, Saturday night was the one night of the week that we could sit in front of the TV all night long. As I recall, there were three shows in a row that you could watch. Take a look below, and tell me that these don't flash you back to the good ol' days. These should be in the order that we watched them on Saturday nights....

Judy!

Hey, Judy!! :) xoxo

I have no idea how to do this!

Oh my gosh! I just wrote a ton of mess somewhere on this blog thing and I have no idea where! In my profile...? Dude... Bertha Mageehee is not Blog Smart.

Hey, everybody!! If y'all are savvy to all of this stuff, then maybe you can find the book I wrote somewhere in all of everyone's info. I just wrote a ton of mess about myself, that's now lost in Blog Land, I'm sure... I'll keep this one short and sweet though ~

Ashley! I sure thought about YOU tonight when Prince performed for the Super Bowl Half Time Show! I remember sitting in the car with you, Georgianna, Neal?, Jack? while they were dropping us off at the Country Club so we could go swimming and we sat in the car forever listening to Prince -- just singing and dancing before we got out. All of you Atkins have such great rhythm. Something we Coleman Cousins weren't as blessed w/! (I'm speaking for you Sas, hope you don't mind. ps - HAPPY BDAY!! xoxoxo) :)
Love to All ~ Take Care! Miss Ya!! My cell is 901.355.0262 - give me a buzz if you're in Memphis. I'll try and call you back sooner than it took for me to call Melinda back! (How long does it take us?? 3 - 4 mos to get back to each other? Sorry - you know I love ya'! :) )

Go Colts!!

In the spirit of football and the Colts' win over the Bears tonight in the Super Bowl, I thought I'd post a quick story on the subject....

There was this kid back in 1978 that thought he was one hell of a football player...

His team, the Golden Bears, played in the Corinth "Y" Football Biddy League Jamboree on October 24th. It was the Cardinals, the Packers, and the Bears....

The Jamboree took place at the Corinth Warrior stadium on a Friday night under the lights. You can't imagine how excited all of us were to play at Warrior stadium. We had always gone to the games there, but we'd never in a million years ever imagined we'd get to play football there! Here's a picture my dad took from the stands of us (The Bears) playing the Cardinals:

And here's a picture of all of us sitting in the bleachers after our game, watching the other games in progress...

See if you can find these people in the picture: Jake, Lucky Briggs, Jay Parrack, Shawn Glidewell, Brett Butler, Jay Fisher, Chip McCollum, Mark Mills, Shane Taylor, John Harris, and Tom Miller. There are a few others in the picture, but I can't remember their names. If you can, then please let me know!

Boy, oh Boy what I would give to go back to those days. We had so much fun and felt so tough playing ball at Warrior stadium. That was our first season of ever playing football...most of us had never strapped on the pads or played any football before in our lives. And at the end of that season, we found ourselves playing at Warrior stadium, at night, under the lights. I can still remember how excited I was and how awesome that felt. Yep...those were the good ol' days, alright...

One more thing

Hey
Forgot one thing...(Mostly for Ashley, Trey and Bill Payne) We were leaving Corinth the other day and at the gas station there was a jeep that was COVERED in mud. You couldn't even tell what color it was. I casually mentioned that I used to go "mud riding" and my 5 year old now thinks I am the coolest mom ever. He asks me about it every day. Being a redneck has its advantages.

Judy Update

Hi everyone!
It's been great reading about everybody and what's going on. Good job Jake. I love seeing pictures of the kids. It still amazes me that "we" have kids. They are all so cute.

OK, quick update on the past 17 years...Soon after going to college I met Chris Riddell (thanks to Dane, Natasha and Steven, I believe) and we got married in 1993. After a short stint as a social worker, I knew that I was not a nice enough person to do that for the rest of my life, so I went back to Ole Miss for a second degree in Interior Design. I taught at Ole Miss for a while and have my own design business. We are still in Oxford and love it. Chris has the Ink Spot and Catdaddy's and we develop property and sometimes "flip" a house. Maybe Valerie and I can get our own show.

We have 2 WILD little boys that I have absolutely no control over, but they are so much fun. Liddon is 5 1/2 and is in kindergarten at Ole Miss, which he thinks is pretty cool. Mack just turned 2 last week and only stops to sleep. I really think that I'm being punished for the things Chris did as a child, 'cause I'm sure I was an angel. My mother is the best grandmother in the world and takes them to Corinth a lot. Some of you may see them around! I'm sure Kelly hears them in the back yard.
Lots of you remember what a good neighborhood that is for kids.

We're at Pickwick just about every week end in the summer. I know ya'll remember where the cabin is. If you're out there, stop by. And for those of you who come to Oxford occasionally, give me a call when your going to be around...662-801-0430.

By the way, when Jake rants and raves about the people who do not know how to do this stuff, he's talking about me. Yes, I know that one of the pictures of Liddon is sideways, but have no idea how to change it.

Hope everyone as a great 2007!

Love, Judy

I'm gonna burn in hell for this.....

....but I just had to do it. I just got back from having dinner with my parents, and they unloaded two more boxes of my old stuff for me to bring home with me. I just got home and have spent the last couple of hours going through one of the boxes. And I ran across some of the funniest things....things I'd forgotten I'd kept. I promised myself I'd limit myself to one post per day or every couple of days. But my wife and daughter are out of town, and I don't have anything better to do, so I've been consumed with going through all of these things. And I ran across one just now, and I just had to post it.

The year is 1985 or 1986...not sure which one, but it was when we were in the 9th grade. We were sitting in Coach Wood's biology class, and Kelly Glenn pulls some pictures out of her purse. I guess she'd had some modeling shots taken or something, and she made the mistake of pulling them out of her purse to sort through in class. Of course, we (Brett, Weston, Chad Potts, John Bell, and a few others) really wanted to see them, but she wouldn't show them to us and put them back in her purse. I won't take full credit for this slick move, simply because I don't remember who exactly reached into her purse. Either way, SOMEONE did, and he grabbed the pack of pictures without her knowing. They got passed around the room, and finally into my possession. Kelly finally realized what was going on, and came over to me and snatched them out of my hands. But she was too late...I had found my favorite and stuck it in my book for safe keeping.

To be honest with you, I've often thought about this picture and this entire ordeal as one of the most covert operations we pulled off in our entire CHS student careers. But I honestly thought I'd lost this picture or perhaps even that Kelly somehow got it back and disposed of it. But not 10 minutes ago, as I was going through a stack of old pictures in the box....this one finally rose from the dead. And Kelly....I know I'm going to burn in hell for this, but I just had to post it. You might not want to dance with me at the Charity Ball in a few weeks now. But I promise I'll make it up to you....

I can already feel my skin starting to get a little crisp.....

I've got you covered...

How many of you remember the process of getting the yellow book covers each year and then folding and taping them around our books? At the beginning of each school year, our teachers would issue our books, and then they'd have a stack of the book covers usually sitting on the table next to the books. We'd each get a book cover and either take it home with us or do it right there on the spot. Not exactly an easy task, but well worth it simply because we now not only had our books "protected," but we also had a great doodle area. So no matter where we were - in class, on the bus, wherever - we could doodle, leave each other notes, and all that. It was also fun to see how long your cover could last. Sometimes they'd last the entire year...sometimes they'd only last a few weeks.

It just so happens that I, for whatever reasons, kept some of my covers. I found a few that I had in the 6th grade...in Mr. Calvery's room. Take a look at this one, in particular:

Take the front shot, for example. Here you'll see that this was the cover for my Spelling book in Mr. Calvery's class. I had fun trying to figure out a cool way to write "Jake" and combine the letters into one weird looking letter (to the left of the warrior head). You'll also see where Jennifer Pace left me a little note: Jennifer -wuz- here. Hilarious! And lastly, you'll see where I once had written "Jake + Ashley" but I had scratched out her name. Why? You'll see when you look at the back cover...

On the back cover, I profess my love (or like) for Kristen Lorentz. You can also see where I tried to start writing it on the left hand side, but I guess I quickly realized I'd run out of room. I even figured out a cool way to incorporate the "S" logo for Security Bank into KriSten's name. I had a crush on Kristen for so many years....sorry Ashley and Melinda....but that's just how it was.

Anyway, I hope this brought back some fun memories...and there's more to come, so don't worry!!!

Regarding Corinth.....

As a follow-up to Angel's post about Corinth, I thought I'd point y'all to the stories that I created on my personal blog about Corinth. Enjoy!

Fond Memories of Corinth

Wow, this site has really caused me to reminisce a lot since I've been reading it...I guess that I was pulled out of all of the fun and moved to another town at too young of an age...I was 15 when we left Corinth, so, I didn't get to experience all of the fun that most of you did together...But, I have so many fond memories of the time that I was there...I hate that my daughter will miss out on some of the fun that I had as a younger person, but, these days you have to be so much more protective...Just some of the things that I'll always remember:

Hanging out at the movie theater and Pizza Hut on Friday nights(THE WALL)
Walking to the YMCA from my house, and spending the entire day in the pool
Slumber parties @ Andrea's(how did Mrs. Garrett ever survive all of us)
Chocolate malts from Borrum's
Painting on the BRIDGE(and the time my dad made me repaint in broad daylight)
THE STRIP
Slugburgers from the White Trolley
My first Love :)
And all of the very special friends that I made over the years....

I know there are more things, but, that's just off the top of my head...Everybody else throw in some of your favorite thoughts and memories of Corinth, CHS, etc...

The effects of alcohol....

Ok. So take a look at this first picture, taken right about the time that we all arrived at the Homecoming '86 dance. Here we are, buttoned up and looking all dapper....and we're sober as judges. I think this was supposed to be a "serious" picture, meaning Weston said, "Ok...no smiles...let's look tough..." I think Brett let one rip right before Joe took the picture, and David and I kind of cracked smiles. Anyway, here we are just as the night began:

And now here's a picture taken towards the end of the night.

Obviously we got as many people in the picture as possible. But notice that somehow my tie has ended up around my head, Weston's is undone, and Brett is trying to be cool with the hand signal (or whatever we called it back then). I'm also trying to figure out why Trey either changed clothes or removed his coat and tie....I can't tell from the picture. But you'll also notice that some people are dressed up, and some are not. Not that it really matters, but I'm trying to remember what was going on because usually everyone dressed up for the dances...or so I thought. Again, I can't really remember. What is quite obvious, however, is that we made frequent trips out to the parking lot to consume some "beverages," that were not available inside. Needless to say, we were all feeling pretty good at the end of the night.

Update from Melinda

Jake, I will have you know I had my drivers licence the September before you. I was born in September of 1970. Anyway, I have had so much fun reading these.
My update for those not on email when I posted.
I went to Ole Miss and graduated from Pharmacy School. I was a pharmacist in Jackson/Madison area for three years. I married Jeff during that time. We have now been married over 10 years. We had our first child, Andrew- now 8 and then moved to NOrth Carolina. We loved it there! We had two precious girls while in NC - Bailey (5) and Margaret (23 months). We moved to Memphis last year. Jennifer Pace Lamb and I live around the corner from each other now. We get together for our little ones to play about 4 times a week. It has been so much fun! I will add pictures sometime, but I am just doing well to figure out how to log on to this blog!
See you at the reunion!
Melinda

I have "No Idea"

Yes, ol' Jake has lots of goodies from our past. Here's a little example:

Remember the high school dances after the football games? At some point, they tried to have one or two of them at the VFW. And, of course, they always had live entertainment. In this particular scenario, I don't know what year or what game it was, but the dance was at the VFW, and the band that was playing was "No Idea." Yes, Elaine, that was your brother's old band. If some of you will recall, they posted fliers all over the CHS campus to get people to go to the dance. In fact, this became a weekly event...waiting to see what horrible attempt they made at these signs. No offense, Elaine...they were young and dumb and just didn't know any better. But some of us sure did look forward to these fliers.

Here's one that I (thankfully) tucked away in my box of assorted memorabilia. Click the picture to see the full-size flier...pretty funny!!

And if you don't recognize them, it's Russell Taylor, Steve Dobbins, Brian Graham, and Stan Burcham. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's Brian Graham...Vicky Graham's brother...but I could be wrong on his name....

Ashley Atkins update

Hello everyone! Has this been fun or what?

Okay, here is my update:

After graduating Ole Miss, I went to paralegal school in Atlanta. I never imagined I would stay - way too far from my family. After being in Atlanta for awhile, I decided I would try it "just for a little bit". I got a job with a law firm downtown, moved in with the ONE girl I knew in Atlanta and "just a little bit" turned into 12 years. I worked at the law firm for about 2 years until I just couldn't take the long hours anymore. I then went to work for what was then Andersen Consulting and worked there for 7 years.

Imet my husband, Robert, on a blind date 4 months after I moved here. He is actually a native of Atlanta which is rare these days. For those of you who know Miss Jackie well, she was not pleased that I would go out on a blind date with a guy "whose people we did not know." HAHA!! Robert travelled most of our dating relationship, but got an intown job after we were engaged. He is a network engineer for Cingular Wireless now (I guess now it is AT&T wireless)! He is the most wonderful guy and deserves a medal for putting up with me!! We dated for 6 years and got married in June 2001 in Memphis. After our first child, John Robert, was born on April 13, 2003, I did not return to work. Little Emily Grace was born July 9, 2005, and my life has not slowed down since! They are two wonderful children who make us laugh everyday (not to mention frustrated every now and then!)

Stephen Brooks and his wife live half a mile from us. Holly Brooks and I have girls' night every Wednesday night, which helps her to cope with living with Stephen! :) (Just kidding, Stephen!) My husband Robert is always amazed at how many people from Mississippi we run into. Our next door neighbor is from Shelby. We were on our honeymoon in St. Thomas and the manager of one of the restaurants was from Olive Branch. We met a couple from Kossuth and another from Tupelo the same trip. I always tell him we are taking over the world!

I don't make it to Corinth very often since my father passed away in 2000. It really is just too sad. I do go every now and then to visit my grandmother and Uncle Dick and Aunt Betty, but mostly we all meet in Oxford now. My sister George and brother Jack both live there now. My mom is in Memphis and my brother Neal and his family are in Olive Branch. It makes going to Ole Miss games quite convenient!!

On a more personal note, my Aunt Betty just had heart surgery, so if everyone could please say a prayer for her I would appreciate it! She has a long road ahead of her.

I am so glad that Jake is pulling us all together again. He always has been the best at keep in touch. I have so many wonderful memories of high school (girls' day at Pickwick, the Hill, friday night football games, riding back roads) I can't wait until our next reunion!!

Take care everyone!!

Merci beaucoup

Thanks everyone for the warm birthday wishes. Here are a few photos of the Dampoux family since I was not smart enough to figure out how to post them when I uploaded my update.

Happy Birthday, Sassy!!

Well, today is Sassy's birthday, so in keeping with tradition, I guess it's time to reminisce. Sassy, it seems like yesterday when I could walk up to your house on Pine Road and we'd jump on your trampoline or play Atari in your den. I remember when we were really young, I pretended to pour Comet into a glass of milk, drank it, and then fell on the floor like I was dead. It scared the hell out of you AND your mother, and y'all drove me home completely FRANTIC! I also remember you singing all the time and doing these TV commercials for us when we were over at your house. I also seem to recall a picture of you when you were really little, and you were wearing your dad's jockstrap as a bra....hilarious! I remember when you and Beth and Judy, in the fifth grade, put a blonde wig on you and took polaroid pictures and put one in my mailbox. You told me that one of your cousins was moving to town and that she was in love with me. I got all excited, and then took a second look at the picture, and I figured out it was you. Bummer!! I also remember your hair and make-up phase...we'd all be out at Pickwick and you'd get in the water but would NOT get your face or hair wet. Used to drive us NUTS!! And who could forget you driving down Fillmore Street (after having a "little" to drink, and basically playing bouncing off every car for about 4 or 5 blocks.

Anyway, Sassy, I know you're a long way away physically, but in spirit and thought you're right here! I hate that I've missed you the last few times you've been in the US, but I promise I'll see you on your next trip here. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
